Boyd Martin wins his third consecutive title at the Land Rover Wellington Eventing Showcase.
It was a USA top three with Buck Davidson and Doug Payne taking second and third respectively. With the dressage marks very close, the show jumping shook up the order with very few clear rounds leaving Marilyn Little in the lead with RF Scandalous with Boyd Martin on his grey mare Welcome Shadow hot on their heels. An unfortunate fall for Marilyn on her first ride RF Demeter meant she could not compete her leading ride leaving Boyd in the prime spot. With several horses having mistakes in the tricky cross country it wasn't plain sailing nevertheless Boyd had a super round finishing just two seconds over the optimum time allowing Boyd to claim his third consecutive win at the Land Rover Wellington Eventing Showcase. An elated Boyd said "“You wouldn’t get a horse that tries any harder than Welcome Shadow,” Boyd said, adding that he was extremely proud of how she performed in all three phases. “The caliber of horses was the best we’ve seen here. The show jumping was bigger and wider. … The cross country was a real test, and I think it’s been good that they’ve gently built it up like this, but the cross country was influential this year compared to years where it wasn’t that influential." He added only 0.8 time penalties, one of the fastest rounds of the day with the ex-foxhunter. “Welcome Shadow is one of my favorites, a failed foxhunter from the owner Craig Callen. This horse has come from left field being a foxhunter, but you wouldn’t get a horse that tries any harder than welcome Shadow,” Martin continued. Shadow will get a light vacation before continuing her training and preparation for her second four-star appearance at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event in April. Comments are closed.
