Double Gold For Germany

Posted on Tuesday, 12 August 2008 05:50PM by
Hinrich Romeike of Germany, riding Marius, won gold in Eventing Individual to match the Eventing Team gold that Germany won earlier in the eventing. Hinrich received no penalty points during the Jumping final and finished with a score of 54.20. Gina Miles of the United States, riding Mckinlaigh, was second on 56.10 points; Kristina Cook of Great Britain, riding Miners Frolic, won bronze on 57.40 points.

Germany then finished on 166.10 penalty points to win the first Olympic gold medal handed out in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Australia finished second on 171.20 points, while Great Britain won bronze on a score of 185.70.

Both Germany and Australia had started the Eventing Jumping test with a narrow margin of less than four penalties between them.  The head-to-head finish continued to the last rider, Hinrich Romeike of Germany, riding Marius, who had one rail down on 54.20 penalties to give Germany the gold medal.

The victory holds special meaning for the Germans who had their gold medal in the Athens Olympic Games withdrawn after Bettina Hoy had penalties upheld.  Great Britain won the bronze medal on a team score of 185.70 with Mary King ending on two poles down riding Call Again Cavalier. "The first mistake he had in two years," said a disappointed King on her fifth Olympic try.

Uptown Eventing were delighted for Ireland's Austin O'Connor who jumped three clear rounds to finish in 21st in their first Olympic games together (see Successful Matches).
